The Warehouse Hotel occupies a restored riverside landmark at Robertson Quay, and its rooms follow the building rather than a template. Under the roof the rooms gain height and a skylight; at ground level one category is windowless and warmly lit on purpose; along the front, the glass turns to the water.

At the top, the River View Mezzanine hides a reading library above the bed and the 57-square-metre River View Suite opens the whole floor to the river. Every room takes a king bed and none takes twins. Downstairs, Po makes the case for staying in with Singaporean cooking, the Lobby Bar keeps the evening going, and the rooftop pool looks over a quarter that walks well in either direction.

The river at Robertson Quay

Robertson Quay is the calmer end of the Singapore River, a stretch that rewards walking at either end of the day and running along it early. The restored shell gives the address its character, and the interiors keep it comfortable rather than reverential. It is a small hotel in a city of very large ones, and that alters what a Singapore trip feels like: the base becomes somewhere to come back to instead of somewhere to sleep.

Six categories, one building

The room list reads like a section drawing. Warehouse Lofts and River View Lofts take the top floor, where the roof gives height and a skylight or window gives the light; the River View Room sits at ground level with the water in front of it; the Warehouse Sanctuary is deliberately windowless and calm. Above them, the Mezzanine tucks its library onto an upper level and the largest suite opens the top floor completely. Every bed is a king.

Po, and the popiah

Po brings Singaporean cooking into a contemporary dining room, and the popiah is where it begins: a rolled skin, a slow-cooked filling and more of the city on one plate than an afternoon of sightseeing usually delivers. The Lobby Bar takes over once dinner is finished. Up on the roof, the infinity pool answers the equatorial middle of the day, and the river path answers it for anyone who would rather run.

The signature moment

Nine in the evening at Po. The popiah arrives first and disappears quickly. Outside, the Singapore River holds the lights of Robertson Quay and the last runners go past the door. Upstairs the rooftop pool is empty and still warm from the afternoon.
