The tanks came first. Dexamenes occupies a wine factory built in the 1920s on the western Peloponnese, where concrete vats and old chemistry labs stood empty beside the beach at Kourouta for decades. K-Studio reanimated them with steel, engineered glass and timber, then had the discipline to stop. The concrete was not softened. It was lit.

What remains is a hotel measured one room at a time: roughly 30 square metres of interior apiece, opening through a glass wall onto a private patio and the sea. The categories differ in height, and in how much of the Ionian each one holds, rather than in standard. Nothing competes with the horizon, which is the point of the whole exercise.

Concrete, and what it frames

The vats were never disguised. Their curved walls, board marks and cool surfaces are the interior, and every addition reads as an addition: a steel frame here, a plane of glass there, timber underfoot. In strong Peloponnesian light this comes across as generosity rather than austerity, because the material is doing so little and the sea is doing so much. Shadows travel the walls through the day, and the hotel is content to let that be enough.

Suites at three heights

Beachfront WineTank Suites sit closest to the water, with the bed, the patio and the horizon in a single line. Above them, Terrace Suites trade that immediacy for a longer view along the shore. The ChemLab Suites, at around 50 square metres, occupy the old laboratory block and give a family or a longer stay more room to spread out. Each category alters the relationship with the sea rather than the standard of the room.

The rhythm of a working shore

Kourouta faces west, so the swimming stays warm into the evening and the sunsets run long. This is not a smart Cycladic address and has no wish to be one: the setting is a broad working beach on the Ionian, with the Peloponnese behind it for anyone with a car and a free morning. At the hotel itself the day resolves into very few decisions, which by the third morning starts to feel like the finest thing about the place.

The signature moment

Evening on a beachfront patio. The concrete has held the heat of the day and gives it back slowly, the glass wall is folded open, and the Ionian goes from silver to grey to nothing at all. Someone swims late. The lights of the hotel stay low on purpose.
