The rest is judgement: an advisor who knows the addresses as well as the guest, who can tell a family August from an anniversary in October, and who chooses from the whole of the collection with that knowledge rather than a filter. One address is proposed, with its reasons, in place of a shortlist to sift.

Then the doors open. The house’s introduction travels ahead of you, so that The Peninsula Hong Kong or Park Hyatt Marrakech knows who is arriving and receives you as a guest of its own, with the privileges that follow. The same advisor keeps the conversation from the first idea until you are home, and remembers it for the next.

One conversation covers all of it: the address in each city, the ship and the sailing, and the drivers, guides and tables that connect them. The advisor who proposes the hotel also arranges the car that meets you, so that every part of the plan answers to the same standard.

Across our hotel programmes, a stay arranged by Dip Needle brings daily breakfast for two, a hotel credit to spend on property, room upgrades, early check-in and late check-out, VIP recognition and preferred offers. The same privileges hold from The Langham, London to CERVO above Zermatt, and they come with the booking, settled long before the door opens.

Privileges apply to eligible bookings and vary by hotel and rate; upgrades and check-in and check-out times are subject to availability.

Yunnan first, where Dali’s lake, Shaxi’s caravan square and Lijiang’s mountain light lie a few hours apart. Then the route widens: the Bund from a Peninsula window in Shanghai, a hutong morning in Beijing, Victoria Harbour at dusk from Regent Hong Kong. The house’s signature destination.

Precision, and the calm it makes room for.

Tokyo rewards one neighbourhood at a time: Yanaka’s wooden streets, Aoyama’s galleries, a counter where one cook serves eight. Hakone supplies the pause, a ryokan dinner and an outdoor bath under the cedars, before Kyoto in November, when the maples turn and Park Hyatt Kyoto waits beside Ninenzaka.

The long lunch, raised to a principle.

Venice before the day begins, when the Rialto market is the only crowd and the lagoon islands are reached by private boat; then the road north to the Dolomites, where a September morning ends with lunch at a rifugio above the tree line. Rome and Milan hold the collection’s Italian addresses.

The choice is the atoll and the villa: sand at the door in the greenery, or an overwater deck with the reef a few strokes away. Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa and Six Senses Laamu are the house’s two addresses, and December to April is the season.

Craft in the medina, silence in the Atlas.

Marrakech is best taken by thread: the coppersmiths of one souk, the zellige of the Ben Youssef Madrasa, a rooftop at the call to prayer. Then the road climbs into the High Atlas, where a mountain guide sets each day’s distance. Park Hyatt Marrakech keeps the range on its horizon.

Light, weather and the length of the day.

The south coast from Reykjavík is one road with a dozen reasons to stop: Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, the black sand at Reynisfjara, the ice of Jökulsárlón drifting out to sea. June barely darkens; winter brings short days and, on the right night, a sky worth the cold. A private driver-guide sets the day by the weather.

07From conversation to arrival

One address, and the case for it.

A conversation about the occasion, the company and the season becomes a written proposal that names the address, the room and the price, with the reasoning set out beside them. Two addresses are offered where the choice is genuinely close; more than that is a shortlist, and a shortlist is not advice. What follows is the quiet part: bookings made, arrivals prepared and an itinerary that asks nothing further of you.

    The occasion and the company come first: a first summer with grandchildren, a fortieth in a city you have never seen, a fortnight at sea. Dates, a sense of budget and the hotel you have loved best complete the brief.

    Your advisor returns with the address and the case for it: the room, the rate, the privileges it carries and the price, on a single page, ready to be settled in a second conversation.

    The arrival

    Nothing more is asked of you. The house makes the bookings, sends its introduction ahead and hands you a single document for the whole stay, and the advisor who chose the address keeps the file open until you are home.
