Regent Porto Montenegro

Boka Bay is the Adriatic at its least Mediterranean: a long inland waterway with mountains standing over it, more alpine in temper than the coast it belongs to. Regent sits on the Tivat waterfront inside Porto Montenegro, the marina village built along its shore.

The hotel takes its manners from the marina and its scale from the mountains. Rooms and suites are dressed in nautical blue and pale neutrals, and the marina is the view from most of them. Kotor and Perast lie a short run along the shore, and the bay is best understood from a boat, which is the one excursion this address makes obvious. Everything after that is a question of which terrace the light has reached.

Porto Montenegro is a marina village rather than a resort strip: berths, terraces and shopfronts, with the hotel among them and the water a few steps from the door. The bay itself is the reason to come. Its towns are old and close together, Kotor and Perast among them, and the mountains change colour through the day in a way that makes an afternoon on the water the most sensible thing anybody does here.

The rooms take their palette from the water outside: blues, sailcloth neutrals and enough restraint to keep the attention on the windows. Wings and categories look out differently, so the outlook varies more than the floor plan does, and a terrace over the marina is the version worth having. The Pool Club Residences make the more residential proposition, with room to unpack properly. Mornings here follow one shape: curtains first, decisions afterwards.

Murano and the garden bar

Murano is the serious table, Mediterranean cooking built on seafood and what the region grows, with the marina outside the glass. Gourmet Corner handles pastries and the lighter half of the day, and Onyx Bar & Garden takes the hour when the light leaves the mountains and the boats begin switching on. Add the Regent Spa and the pools and the hotel has an answer for weather, appetite and energy in roughly equal measure.
