Regent Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a city best read from the water, and Regent stands where the reading is clearest: on the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, with Victoria Harbour filling the glass and the island rising on the far side. Ferries cross the foreground all day. At night the towers do the work.

Chi Wing Lo designed the rooms as an answer to that spectacle, not a competitor to it: warm timber, muted cloth, careful proportion and, in the rooms that face the water, a long window seat that turns an hour indoors into the point of the afternoon. Downstairs, Lai Ching Heen sets its jade tables against the same water and the Kowloon promenade starts at the door.

Kowloon at the water’s edge

The address is 18 Salisbury Road, which puts the promenade a few paces from the lobby and the island skyline directly opposite. Tsim Sha Tsui is the busier, more granular half of Hong Kong, and the hotel makes no attempt to insulate anyone from it: the waterfront walk begins outside, the ferries run all day and the crossing counts as a pleasure, not an errand. What the building offers instead is a vantage point. The city moves; the room holds still.

Chi Wing Lo’s reply

Chi Wing Lo, who is from the city, treats a guest room as a piece of architecture rather than a scheme of decoration. Timber is warm and close-grained, fabrics are muted, and the proportions are settled enough that nothing competes with the window. In the harbour categories that window comes with a long seat, wide enough to sit sideways on with a book while the afternoon disappears. City-view rooms are the quieter choice; the harbour ones are the reason people book here twice.

Two stars above the water

Lai Ching Heen holds two Michelin stars for its Cantonese cooking, and it is arranged like a jade box: green stone at each place setting, the harbour running the length of the windows. Dinner there is the most Hong Kong thing the hotel does, and the least hurried. Elsewhere the building keeps other tables facing the same view, so an evening spent entirely indoors never feels like a compromise made for the weather.
