Carlton Cannes, a Regent Hotel

The Carlton is the Croisette’s own building, the pale symmetrical one that everybody photographs and only some people walk into. Its beach club sits across the boulevard on the sand, so the life of the hotel runs straight out to the water.

Behind it is the half that decides the holiday: a garden pool framed by the building itself, several degrees quieter than the promenade and out of every sightline. A Riviera day can be assembled from both halves, which is the whole trick of the place. Four dining rooms cover the hours worth dressing for, and the walk between them is measured in metres rather than minutes.

Front row on the Croisette

The address is 58 Boulevard de la Croisette, facing the bay, with the Carlton Beach Club on the sand opposite. Cannes performs along that boulevard from late morning until very late indeed, and the hotel has stood there long enough to be part of the performance rather than a spectator of it. Nothing about the position is discreet, which is precisely its argument: a seafront address where the passing traffic counts as entertainment and the walk to dinner rarely goes in a straight line.

The garden behind the façade

Behind the building the noise stops. The garden pool is framed by the hotel itself, planted and enclosed, and it turns the middle of the day into something private in a town that offers very little privacy. Garden-facing rooms look onto it; sea-view and city-view categories face the other Cannes, and selected rooms add a balcony to stand on while the evening assembles itself below. Suites and residences carry the same soft, warm-toned decoration into space enough for a longer stay.

From the sand to the table

Lunch belongs to the Carlton Beach Club, which is on the sand and takes as long as it takes. Dinner has options: Riviera Restaurant for the coast’s own cooking, Rüya for a different accent altogether, Bar 58 for whatever follows. The Camélia Tea Lounge fills the hours in between, which on the Riviera are the hours that matter. Between the four of them the hotel can hold an entire day without anyone feeling confined to it.
