Via Tommaso Grossi is a small street with a very large advantage: the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II opens directly off it, and the Duomo stands at the far end of that. Milan rewards proximity, since most of what visitors come for sits within a few hundred metres, and this address puts the hotel inside the circle rather than on the edge of it.

Indoors the mood is domestic. Rooms and suites follow Milanese habits, which means proportion, restraint and materials chosen for the way they age. La Cupola sits beneath a glass dome and carries breakfast and the daytime. Mio Lab makes aperitivo a proper event with the Galleria in view. Pellico 3 turns the evening Mediterranean, and AQVAM Spa keeps a whirlpool and steam rooms for the hour after a day spent walking on marble.

Off the Galleria, onto the Duomo

The Galleria opens off the street the hotel stands on, and the Duomo stands at the end of the Galleria. Teatro alla Scala is a few minutes the other way. It is difficult to overstate what this does to a short stay in Milan: an exhibition, a fitting, a coffee and a performance can all be arranged in one day without ever calculating the journey between them.

Milanese proportion upstairs

The rooms are furnished the way Milanese apartments are furnished, in warm woods and quiet colour, well proportioned and with nothing shouting for attention. The effect is residential rather than decorated, which suits a city that treats design as a daily habit instead of an event. Terrace Suites add private outdoor space above the rooftops, and the signature suites take a more particular view of what a Milanese interior should be.

La Cupola takes breakfast and the daytime under its glass dome, which is the pleasantest room in the building before noon.
