Beyond the ramparts the ground opens out and Marrakech becomes a horizon rather than a maze. Al Maaden lies out here beside its golf course, low and long, with water running through the design, palms doing the shading and the Atlas holding the southern edge of the view. After a morning in the souks the contrast is not gradual, and that is rather the point of it.

Rooms begin at 55 square metres and every one has a furnished terrace, which is the fact that shapes a stay. Two pools divide the guests sensibly, the Main Pool kept for adults and the Oasis Pool for everyone else. TFAYA takes Moroccan and wider Arab cooking into a contemporary brasserie, Pavillon serves Mediterranean and Nikkei plates in the open air and Le Spa works from the hammam traditions the city is built on.

Beyond the ramparts, at Al Maaden

The distance from the medina is the whole idea. Al Maaden gives the resort room and a horizon, with the golf course in front and the mountains behind it, so the contrast with the souks arrives all at once rather than by degrees. The city remains essential and is a short drive away. What changes is the return: not a lobby, but an arrival into open ground, water and shade.

A terrace with every room

The entry king and twin rooms run to 55 square metres with dining areas, marble bathrooms and a furnished terrace apiece, which in this climate effectively doubles the floor plan. Mountain-view categories put the Atlas at the end of the sightline. Suites add space again and selected villas bring a private pool into the arrangement. The interiors stay contemporary while borrowing Morocco’s materials and colour, and never dress up as a riad.

TFAYA, the pavilion and the hammam

TFAYA gives Moroccan and Arab cooking a contemporary brasserie setting and takes the evening seriously. Pavillon Terrace & Pool loosens things considerably, with Mediterranean and Nikkei influences served in the open air. The Living Room fills the gap between them with tea-time dishes and evening tapas. Le Spa works from the hammam traditions of the city, which after a day in the medina is less a treatment than a repair.

Six in the evening on the terrace. The heat has gone out of the stone, the palms have stopped moving and the Atlas has turned the colour it keeps for the last hour of the day. Somewhere below, the Oasis Pool empties. Dinner at TFAYA is not for a while yet.
