Bangkok is a city of transit, and the great luxury here is not having to negotiate it. The hotel stands above Central Embassy at 88 Wireless Road with direct access to Ploenchit skytrain station, so a day can begin and end without a single conversation about traffic. Everything else is a question of altitude.

The pool runs to 40 metres, terraced and planted, with a 25-metre infinity-edge lap section and cabanas along the sides, and it holds the city at exactly the right distance. Rooms start at 48 square metres and are furnished for looking rather than performing, in soft tones that let the light do the work. Penthouse Bar + Grill takes the top of the building and the top of the evening, while Embassy Room La Marina cooks the Italian coast a very long way from any coast at all.

A station in the basement

Central Embassy connects the hotel directly to Ploenchit skytrain station, which in this city is worth more than any number of sea views. The shopping is downstairs, the network is under it and Lumphini Park, Sukhumvit and the river are reachable without surrendering an hour to a taxi. The result is a hotel that can be left and re-entered several times a day, which is how Bangkok is best taken.

Quiet rooms above the noise

Entry rooms begin at 48 square metres, generous for so central an address, and the furnishing is deliberately unassertive: soft tones, natural materials and art placed rather than displayed. The windows carry the drama instead. Corner categories change the angle on the city and the larger suites add separate living rooms. This is a Park Hyatt in the strict sense, where the room declines to compete with what is outside it.

The pool, then the penthouse

The pool is terraced across several levels, 40 metres in all with a 25-metre infinity-edge lap section, and enough planting and cabanas to make an afternoon disappear. Above it, Penthouse Bar + Grill runs a steakhouse and a bar with the skyline laid out beneath. Embassy Room La Marina takes a different route through Italian coastal cooking, and the Living Room handles the hours that need nothing more than a chair.
