Most of Khao Lak reaches for timber and thatch. Casa de La Flora went the other way: 34 slate-grey cube villas set among palms a few steps from the sand, their broad glass fronts turned to the Andaman Sea. The severity is the charm. Against tropical light and moving water, hard edges look cool rather than cold, and the villa stops being a place to change for dinner.

Six categories decide how the days go, from the compact Studio Pool Villa, private water and a bath worth the delay, to the beachfront villas built for a family or two couples. La Aranya cooks at the beach and Spa La Casa handles the middle of the afternoon. Little else is asked of anyone.

Hard edges, tropical light

The architecture is unusually assertive for a beach resort: stacked rectilinear volumes in dark grey, deep overhangs, glass where a wall would be expected. What saves it from severity is everything around it. Palms interrupt the geometry, the pool throws light back onto the concrete, and by late afternoon the whole composition warms up. It photographs best at six o’clock and looks better still in person at the same hour.

Six villas, six holidays

The choice of villa matters more here than at most resorts, because each one changes the geometry of the day. The Studio Pool Villa is a single elegant volume, its pool on one side and its bath placed for the view. Beachfront Pool Villas trade a little seclusion for sand at the threshold. The Beachfront Suite adds a separate sitting room, while the duplex two-bedroom and the Beachfront Grand Pool Villa are built for company, the duplex now offering king or twin beds.

The short walk to dinner

La Aranya sits by the beach and cooks international dishes with a Thai accent, which is the right register for a place where nobody wants a long menu. Spa La Casa deals with the hours when the sun is at its least forgiving, and there is a shared pool and a fitness centre for anyone who tires of their own. Khao Lak is quieter than Phuket by design, and dinner can be laid on the villa terrace instead.
