The itinerary

Days 1–2
Reykjavík, the small capital
The first evening is a walk to the harbour and a table for langoustine or lamb, and nothing else. The next day takes the city at its own scale: the corrugated houses, Harpa on the waterfront, a bathing afternoon at a lagoon within half an hour of the centre and a second dinner chosen with the driver-guide, who joins you the following morning.

Days 3–4
East, past the falls
The road east leaves the city behind within the hour. Seljalandsfoss is walked behind and Skógafoss climbed beside, and lunch is taken in Vík before the first coastal base. The following day stays local, so that the journey has a full day without a hotel move: Reynisfjara’s basalt and the arch of Dyrhólaey, then the light on the sea from the hotel.

Days 5–6
Glacier and lagoon
One day goes to the ice: a walk on Sólheimajökull with a certified glacier guide, or the drive east to Jökulsárlón, where the icebergs turn in the lagoon and lie on the black beach beyond. The other day follows the light, a viewpoint revisited or a shorter walk, and the second base, where chosen, brings the glaciers of Vatnajökull to the window.

Day 7
West, with time in hand
The return along the coast is a transfer day with room in it: a stop revisited under different weather, lunch in a village and arrival in Reykjavík with the evening free. The final night sits within reach of the airport, so that the last morning is a departure rather than a drive.

Day 8
The departure, well timed
A private transfer to Keflavík allows for the road, the season and the flight. Those who would rather add time than miles extend the coast by a base or the city by a night; those who return in another season find the same road a different country.

Iceland’s south coast is a single road with the country’s great set pieces strung along it: Seljalandsfoss, which you can walk behind; Skógafoss, with its staircase to the top; the black sand and basalt columns of Reynisfjara below Vík; and, further east, the glacier tongues of Vatnajökull reaching down towards the road and Jökulsárlón, where the icebergs drift out to sea and wash up on the beach like glass. Everyone drives it. The difference is in how. A private driver-guide who reads the forecast turns the day around the weather, doubling back for the light at a viewpoint or trading a long drive for a walk when the wind allows. Two nights in Reykjavík open the journey and one closes it, with four on the coast in one or two bases between, and June’s endless light or the short, sharp days of winter set its whole character.
To your measure
The reach of the route is the first decision: a single base near Vík keeps the drives short and the hotel unchanged, while a second base further east brings the glacier lagoon within easy distance. A glacier walk with a certified guide, a bathing afternoon at the Sky Lagoon on the way out of the city or a morning on the black beach with a photographer’s patience all fit the brief. Winter travellers hope for the aurora, and the nights are planned to give the sky its chance; the daylight sets the rest.
