Few capitals reward a green address as thoroughly as Tokyo. The hotel stands in Marunouchi with Hibiya Park and the Imperial Palace Gardens directly opposite and Ginza a walk away, so a day can be spent on foot and the evening spent looking down at it.
Inside, Japanese craft is applied at close range, in timber, paper and textile, with a warmth that takes the edge off the city’s visual noise. The hotel is generous with space by the standards of Tokyo and unusually attentive to what each window contains, whether that is a park, a palace garden or the working streets of Marunouchi. Then it does the other thing a great city hotel should do, which is to offer a way up: a heated pool at one end of the day and, at the very top of the building, a dining room at the other.
Facing the palace gardens
The position is the first pleasure. The palace gardens and the park lie across the road, Marunouchi gives the streets their weekday purpose, and Ginza begins a few minutes south. It makes for a stay conducted largely on foot, with the hotel near enough to return to at midday rather than at nightfall. Tokyo rewards walking and punishes overreaching, and this address quietly settles the question of where to begin.
Craft at close range
The rooms use Japanese materials where a hand will land: timber, paper, textile, lacquer. Space is unusually forgiving for this city, the technology is present and unobtrusive, and the outlooks vary between the streets, Hibiya Park and the palace gardens, so the category chosen sets the character of the stay. The Deluxe Suite adds a living and dining area wide enough for company. After a day of Tokyo’s density, the restraint indoors reads as generosity.
A swim, then the 24th floor
The 20-metre indoor pool is heated and unhurried, with a vitality pool and a balcony beside it turned towards the greenery opposite. Elsewhere in the building, Hei Fung Terrace keeps a Cantonese kitchen. In the evening the hotel is best taken upwards: Peter occupies the 24th floor, where modern French technique meets Japanese produce, and Peter: The Bar carries on in the same direction, with the city in the windows and cocktails that make their own argument about Japan.
