The corner of Fifth Avenue and 55th Street is Midtown at its most concentrated: shops below, Central Park a short walk north, and an entrance that still makes a small ceremony of coming in off the pavement.

What Bill Rooney Studio has done inside is the opposite of grand. The refurbished rooms read as a private Manhattan apartment, in a restrained palette, with the bathrooms in marble, and the real decision at this address is which way to face: inwards to the interior courtyard, or outwards at the avenue and the cross street from a higher floor. Above it all, Pen Top puts the skyline back within reach. Below, a glass-enclosed pool and the spa remove it again. Midtown is a district most people pass through, and the trick here is to hold somewhere in it worth staying still for.

Midtown, on the corner

This stretch of Fifth Avenue is one of the few in Manhattan that works as well for an appointment as for an afternoon with nothing in it. Central Park lies a short walk north, the shops begin immediately outside, and the cross streets carry enough of the city’s business to keep the address awake. The hotel’s value in that setting is arithmetic: everything is near enough that a day can be broken in half and resumed.

Courtyard or avenue

Bill Rooney Studio’s refurbishment traded hotel formality for the manners of an apartment, in a quiet palette, with furniture arranged for sitting rather than for display, marble in the bathrooms and deep soaking tubs in the Grand Premier rooms. The rest comes down to which way to face. Superior Rooms look into the interior courtyard, where Midtown becomes a rumour. Grand Premier Rooms take Fifth Avenue or 55th Street from a height that makes the traffic below look choreographed.

Roof, pool and Clement

Pen Top is the reason an evening can start at home. Its rooftop seating sits among the office towers, close enough that the lit windows opposite become the decoration and the skyline stops behaving like a postcard. Clement takes the daylight hours, with contemporary American cooking and a room that suits a long breakfast. Between them, the spa and the glass-enclosed swimming pool supply the rarest amenity in Midtown, which is an hour of being unreachable.
