The Peninsula Istanbul

The Peninsula Istanbul is not one building but four, standing together on the Karaköy waterfront inside Galataport. The arrangement gives the address the character of a small quarter rather than a hotel, with gardens between the blocks, the promenade along one edge and the Bosphorus doing what it has always done.

Water is the organising idea. One pool sits at the edge of the strait, close enough that the shipping passes in front of it. Another stands indoors among marble columns and under domes, in a room that makes swimming feel nearer to ceremony than to exercise. The rooms are spread through all four buildings, so the Grand Deluxe category changes with the architecture, and the suites bring gardens, balconies and terraces into the question. On the roof there is a Turk-Asian kitchen, with a bar beside it that keeps going long after dinner.

Four buildings at the water

The hotel stands inside Galataport, the waterfront district at Karaköy, and occupies four buildings, three of them historic and restored and one of them new. Courtyards and planting fill the space between the blocks, a promenade runs along the front, and the Bosphorus sets the tempo through ferries, freighters and the occasional gull. Istanbul is a demanding city to sightsee, and an address that rewards standing still is worth more here than a shorter walk to a monument.

A room per building

Because the accommodation is distributed across the buildings, the Grand Deluxe rooms differ from one another in a way a single tower could not manage. The windows are large, the palette is light, and the architecture behind them changes from block to block. The suites take it further, adding gardens, balconies and terraces, and a suite with outdoor space alters a longer stay entirely, since the finest hours in this city are the early and the late ones and both are spent outdoors.

Marble domes, rooftop kitchen

The indoor pool is the surprise: 25 metres of water among Marmara marble columns, under illuminated domes, with the acoustics of a bathhouse and none of the crowd. The outdoor pool is its opposite, set at the water’s edge with the traffic of the strait passing in front of it. Above both, GALLADA by Fatih Tutak cooks in a Turk-Asian register on the roof, and Topside Bar holds the same view for a last hour. Water below, water beside, water in the distance.
