The Peninsula Bangkok

The Peninsula Bangkok has the Chao Phraya on one side and the Thonburi bank behind it, which means the city arrives by boat. The hotel runs its own shuttle across the water, and that short passage does more for the mood of a stay than any amount of marble.

What follows on this bank is space. The rooms are lined with teak and silk, every one of them facing the water, with a sitting area and a dressing space kept apart from both. Outside, the gardens run down to the river, and the shade under a Thai sala is as good a place as any to lose an afternoon. Thiptara sets its tables at the water’s edge and River Cafe & Terrace keeps the daylight hours, which between them make the case that dinner should be timed by the boats rather than by the clock.

Arriving by boat

Bangkok’s traffic is famous and avoidable. From the Thonburi bank the hotel’s shuttle carries guests across the Chao Phraya to the piers on the far side, and the crossing turns the daily commute into the most agreeable part of it. The river also settles the geography of a stay: the temples and the markets belong to one shore, the hotel and its gardens to the other, and the water between them keeps the two from running together.

Teak, silk and river

Deluxe Rooms run to between 45 and 47 square metres, floored in polished teak and dressed in silk, with a sitting area, a separate dressing space and a marble bathroom holding twin basins, a bath and a shower of its own. Every one of them faces the river, which is not incidental. The Chao Phraya is working water, busy with barges and ferries from early morning, and a window onto it is better company at breakfast than any screen.

Salas, shade and Thiptara

The pool sits at garden level with sun loungers along it and traditional Thai salas for shade, an arrangement that makes a long afternoon here entirely defensible. In the evening the gardens lead to Thiptara, whose tables are set outdoors at the river with Thai cooking to match, while River Cafe & Terrace keeps a lighter watch over the daylight hours. The river supplies the continuity, bright and industrious by day, lit and slower after dark.
