Myconian Deos

Mykonos is a town to look down on, in the most literal sense, and Myconian Deos has the hill. Its 40 rooms, suites and residences are built in rough stone against the slope above Mykonos Town, so that the white cubes, the windmills and the harbour lie below the terrace and the Aegean fills everything beyond.

The terraces are furnished, and most have water of their own, a hot tub in the Delta rooms, a private pool in the suites and residences, with the Lamda Grand Suite adding an infinity edge to its 60 square metres. Epico serves all three meals and its bar keeps the poolside, the Private Spa and an indoor pool cover the days when the meltemi blows, and the town, with its noise and its crowds, waits down the hill for those who want it.

The town below the terrace

Deos is on the hill, and the hill is the point. From the terraces, Mykonos Town is laid out below like a model, white and low, with the harbour and the sea beyond. The position gives the hotel a double life: the island’s best-known town is close below, but the hotel stands apart from it, above the noise, with the wind for company. The architecture is rustic stone and Cycladic form, contemporary in its lines, so the building settles into the hillside when seen from the town and, seen from the terrace, disappears altogether behind the view.

Delta rooms to Zeta maisonette

The categories are named by Greek letter. Delta rooms, at 30 square metres, come with a furnished terrace, a hot tub and a partial or full sea view; a third Delta category has a private pool. The Beta Suite has a pool, the Lamda Grand Suite a private infinity pool on a landscaped terrace, and the residences, Omicron, Omega, Alpha and the two-bedroom Zeta maisonette of 170 square metres, take parties of up to six. The difference between a hot tub and a pool is the difference between a good room and a very good one.

Epico and the indoor pool

Epico is the hotel’s clock, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with its bar beside the outdoor pool for the hours in between. The Private Spa, the indoor pool, the outdoor jacuzzi and the fitness centre answer the days when the wind is up or the sun has been sufficient, and a concept store supplies the things one forgot to pack, in the Mykonos idiom. The hotel is seasonal, open for the summer and closed for the winter, which is as it should be on an island that has a season and a silence.
