The Corniche de l’Estérel is the most vivid stretch of the French Riviera: red rock falling into blue water, umbrella pines above it and the Île d’Or a short way offshore. Les Roches Rouges occupies a striking 1950s modernist building on that shoreline and has kept it low, clean and white.

The rooms follow the same rule, drawn in straight lines and given over to light, with balconies facing the sea and furnishings that decline to compete with it. The seawater pool is the reason people return: a still rectangle of the Mediterranean held at the edge of the actual Mediterranean, with the rocks and a private beach a few steps below. Estelo keeps the Provençal table. Lunch has been known to last here until the swimming resumes.

Red rock and blue water

The Golden Corniche gives this part of the coast its colour: red rock, green pines and a Mediterranean that changes register with the hour. The hotel takes the shoreline directly, with a private beach among the rocks and the Île d’Or in view across the water. Kayaks and paddleboards go out from below, and the trails of the Estérel massif begin a short drive away. Doing none of it is an entirely respectable choice.

A modernist block, kept white

The 1950s building carries the hotel: horizontal, unfussy and confident enough to leave the view alone. Inside, clean lines and pale surfaces hold the attention where it belongs, and a sea-view room with a balcony earns its premium for the simple reason that most of the day is spent looking out of it. Rooms function here as a pause between swimming and eating, and they are dressed accordingly.

The seawater pool

Filled from the sea and set into the rock at the water’s edge, the pool is where the day settles. Swimming in it feels like swimming in the Mediterranean with the currents removed, and the loungers around it are the best seats on the property. Estelo takes the evening with Provençal cooking and produce from the coast, its tables facing the water. Between the two, the afternoon requires no arrangements of any kind.

One o’clock, and lunch has arrived at a table above the rocks. The seawater pool lies flat and cool below, the Île d’Or holds the middle distance, and the pines give just enough shade. The swimming resumes when the coffee is finished, and not before.
