Sydney is not a discreet city, which is what makes this hotel interesting. It sits on Kent Street in Millers Point, equidistant from Barangaroo, Walsh Bay and The Rocks, and trades on none of them. The scale inside is domestic rather than civic: large rooms, quiet corridors and a harbour that has to be walked to rather than admired from a lobby.

The surprise is downstairs. The indoor pool is roofed with a painted replica of the Southern Hemisphere sky, and when the water is still the constellations come back up off the surface. The Day Spa by Chuan sits beside it. Above, The James cooks contemporary British food with an Australian accent and Observatory Bar keeps the evening going. Very few hotels in this city give a visitor so much reason to stay indoors.

Millers Point, three ways out

The address is equidistant from Barangaroo, Walsh Bay and The Rocks, which puts three quite different Sydneys within 10 minutes on foot: new waterfront, working theatres and the oldest streets in the country. Observatory Hill sits just above, and the foreshore runs on from there towards Circular Quay. It is the rare central location in this city that still has a neighbourhood attached to it rather than an esplanade.

Terraces, suites and The Residence

Deluxe Rooms look either at the city or west across the harbour, and both are generous by Sydney standards, with handmade furniture and marble bathrooms. Premium Terrace Rooms add private outdoor space, which changes the character of a morning entirely. Larger suites bring separate living areas, and The Residence goes furthest with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and a kitchenette, for anyone treating Sydney as somewhere to live briefly rather than visit.

The pool under the constellations

The indoor pool carries a painted replica of the Southern Hemisphere sky on its ceiling, and when the surface settles the constellations reappear in the water. It is a genuinely strange and lovely thing to swim beneath. The Day Spa by Chuan continues the mood next door. Upstairs the register changes: The James serves contemporary British cooking with an Australian accent, and Observatory Bar handles the wine, the cocktails and the plates that go with them.

The signature moment

Early, before the harbour wakes. The pool is empty, the water flattens out and the painted constellations settle overhead, so a slow length is spent looking up at a southern sky that happens to be indoors. Afterwards, coffee, and The Rocks still half asleep outside.
