The Langham Huntington has stood above Pasadena since 1914, on 17 acres whose architecture and landscape came from the same hands that shaped the Huntington nearby. This is the older, slower Southern California, the one that existed before the freeways decided how the region would be crossed, and it has kept its habits: lawns, long verandas, cottages set apart from the main house and two pools that give the mornings their shape.

The estate rewards staying put. The covered Picture Bridge has been part of the property since 1932, restored in 2020 and hung with 41 painted California scenes, and it remains the best short walk on the grounds. Beyond the gates, the Huntington’s collections and the Norton Simon Museum make a serious cultural case for Pasadena. Most guests manage both and still come back in time for the swim.

The grounds are the argument. Lawns run out from the main house towards the Horseshoe Garden, cottages sit far enough apart to feel private and the covered Picture Bridge has been in place since 1932, restored in 2020 and hung with 41 painted California scenes. Pasadena supplies the rest within a short drive, the Huntington’s collections and gardens and the Norton Simon Museum among them. Los Angeles is close without ever being audible.

Cottages, lanais and main house

Accommodation spreads across the estate rather than stacking inside it. Rooms in the main hotel keep to classic Californian furnishing with Italian marble bathrooms. Lanai Rooms open through French doors onto a balcony or patio above the Lanai Pool. The cottages sit apart from everything, which is largely the point of them, and suites add living space again. A couple and a family of five can have entirely different holidays on the same lawn.

Two pools, then The Royce

The Lanai Pool and the Royce Pool divide the daylight between them, and the day organises itself around whichever one has the shade. The Terrace handles lunch without ceremony. In the evening The Royce brings wood-fired steakhouse cooking to a garden-facing room, while The Tap Room, panelled and low-lit, keeps a patio above the Horseshoe Garden for the hour before dinner. Chuan Spa takes the guests who never reach the water at all.

Late afternoon on the Tap Room patio, the Horseshoe Garden going gold below and sprinklers starting somewhere out of sight. A drink arrives. Across the lawn the Picture Bridge stands empty, the light is doing what light does here, and dinner at The Royce is still an hour away.
