The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston put this building up in 1922 and moved out in 1981, and the hotel that took its place has changed remarkably little. The Boston Landmarks Commission sees to that. What survives is the confidence of an institution that expected to be believed: a banking hall built at a scale that made a deposit feel consequential, and a façade that has barely moved since. Grana now serves breakfast in it.

Upstairs the register changes completely. Rooms are New England in temperament, marble in the bathroom and unfussy everywhere else, with the park-facing categories looking out over green rather than granite. The Financial District empties at weekends, the waterfront is a short walk and the whole place has the manner of a private club that has decided to be friendly.

A bank that kept its face

Built in 1922 and converted in 1981, the building is protected by the Boston Landmarks Commission and looks much as it did when money rather than guests came through the door. That gives the hotel something rare in a city of red brick: interior scale. It also places it a few streets from the waterfront, with the Financial District emptying out after Friday and leaving the neighbourhood unusually calm for a central address.

New England on the upper floors

The rooms decline to compete with the lobby. They are soft, pale and quietly furnished, with marble bathrooms and enough restraint to feel residential rather than staged. Club Executive Park View Rooms face Norman B. Leventhal Park, which is a small piece of green luck in this part of Boston. The Club Bi-Level Family Suites stack a living room beneath the bedroom, an arrangement that keeps a late conversation well away from anyone asleep.

Grana, then The Fed

Grana takes the daytime, serving Italian food beneath the old banking hall for breakfast, lunch and weekend brunch, with a ceiling that makes ordering eggs feel like a state occasion. The Fed inherits the evening: cocktails, seasonal cooking and a low, convivial room that seems to belong to a different building altogether. A heated indoor pool, a whirlpool and saunas cover the hours when Boston weather takes a firm position.

The signature moment

Eight in the morning at Grana, alone with the coffee and a ceiling three storeys up. The room was built to hold the reserves of a region and now holds about a dozen breakfasts. Sunlight crosses the stone. It is, briefly, the grandest quiet room in Boston.
