Fogo Island Inn stands where Newfoundland runs out into the North Atlantic, facing open water and nothing else. The building is startling from outside and warm within: rooms furnished with chairs, quilts and textiles made by islanders, glass from floor to ceiling and a place to sit out the weather.

It is also a social business. Operating surpluses are reinvested in the community, which gives a stay consequences beyond the bill. The kitchen cooks what the island’s planters, fishers, hunters and foragers bring in, and the tariff is full board. An island orientation begins most stays, and the walking, the water and the wildlife take it from there. Hot tubs sit on the roof, which on a clear northern night is the best address on the property.

Fogo, taken slowly

The island rewards attention rather than activity. The inn opens most stays with an island orientation, and hiking, kayaking and seasonal wildlife fill the days that follow, but the quieter encounters are what guests describe afterwards: a change in the sky, a path across the rock, a conversation in a fishing community that has been here for centuries. The North Atlantic sets the terms. Everything else adjusts to it.

Made on the island

Inside, the furniture, quilts and textiles were made by Fogo Island artisans, and the contrast is the whole experience: a formidable seascape read from a chair that somebody nearby built by hand. Rooms differ in shape and outlook, and glass is used generously in all of them. On the roof, hot tubs face open water, which under the northern lights is worth the trouble of the stairs at almost any hour.

Meals and snacks are included, and the kitchen works from what the island supplies: fish landed close by, root vegetables, berries and the preserving traditions a place like this depends on. The dining room turns those into something contemporary without losing the accent. Behind it sits the social-business model, in which operating surpluses return to the community. Dinner reads better for knowing where the money goes as well as where the fish came from.
