Booked through Dip Needle, a Quark voyage carries onboard credit and the selected offers open to our cruise partnerships, set beside the fare before you commit. Region and season come first: the Antarctic Peninsula in December is a different proposition from Svalbard in July, and the wildlife, the light and the ice each keep their own calendar. Then the adventure options, which draw many travellers to this fleet and which reward being chosen early rather than at the gangway. Ultramarine’s helicopters do not operate on Svalbard and Spitsbergen voyages, so the itinerary decides what is possible. Around it we arrange the flights, the gateway nights and the recovery days a long way south deserves.

04Behind the programme
Quark Expeditions
Quark Expeditions goes nowhere except the ends of the earth, and the specialisation shows. Ultramarine was built for what a polar day can be made to contain: 20 Zodiacs launched from a hangar at water level, so a landing takes minutes rather than an hour of shuffling on a platform, and two twin-engine helicopters flown from two helidecks, which put a small party on ground no ship will ever reach. The Panorama Lounge holds the ice behind glass for the hours in between.
With 199 guests aboard, the numbers stay human. What raises a polar voyage above a very cold holiday is the expedition team: the people who read the weather, choose the bay and explain, on the way back, what the animal on the floe was doing. The ship makes the day possible. They make it worth the distance.

Name the ambition
Tell us which pole and which month, what you hope to see and how active you would like the days to be. Previous expedition travel is useful for us to know.

Ship and adventure options
We compare vessels, routes and the added activities worth booking early, then set the fare, the onboard credit and the offers for your dates in one written proposal.

Gateway and kit
On approval the cabin is reserved and the approach arranged: flights to Ushuaia or Longyearbyen, the nights before sailing and the clothing and equipment the voyage expects.

Room for the ice
Documents follow before departure. Ice, weather and safety govern every landing and flight, and the helicopters do not fly on Svalbard and Spitsbergen voyages, so the days stay deliberately open.
