On a ship of this scale the decisions that matter are quiet ones. Which deck keeps the party within reach of the lifts and still far enough from the Lido at midnight. Which departure port spares the family a dawn flight. Which sailing balances sea days against the ports the children have been promised. We read the deck plans, place the cabins so the group travels as one, and set the days ashore at a pace that suits the youngest aboard and the least energetic.

Carnival built its reputation on a simple conviction: a ship should be somewhere people want to be, not merely the way from one port to the next. Mardi Gras makes the argument at full scale. Six zones give the vessel the geography of a small town, from the atrium theatre of Grand Central to the jazz and Creole cooking of the French Quarter, the Italian tables of La Piazza and the open water of Summer Landing. Above all of it runs BOLT, the first rollercoaster at sea, on an open-air course with the ocean turning underneath.
What follows is a holiday that accommodates a party of different appetites. Grandparents, teenagers and the friends who came for the sun can spend the whole afternoon apart and still meet at the same table by eight, which is the particular Carnival gift.
