There is one thing to see at Ngorongoro and the lodge is built to see it. From the rim the land drops away into an immense green basin, and that view is carried through the terraces, the dining rooms and the windows of the guest rooms, so it is rarely out of sight for long.

Timber, stone and glass give the building a grounded, unfussy character, and the lounge has beams, a substantial fireplace and the kind of seating that absorbs a returning safari party for a couple of hours. The kitchen looks to African cooking and to the fire, and every room in which food is served is turned towards the same landscape. Guided drives into the crater and walks along the rim supply the days. The evenings look after themselves.

On the rim itself

The lodge stands inside the Ngorongoro Conservation Area with the crater immediately below, which turns the view into something to be watched rather than glanced at. Early light fills the basin from one side, cloud crosses it through the middle of the day, and by evening the whole of it has gone blue and then black. Guests who allow for time on the terrace as well as time in the vehicle get the better version of this place.

Timber, stone and firelight

Natural materials and large windows keep the interiors tied to what is outside. The guest rooms are the sheltered way to hold the view; the shared lounge, with its beams and its stone fireplace, is where the day gets discussed. Safari days are long and dusty, and a lodge earns its keep in the hours afterwards, which is where this one is unusually good: warm, quiet and built for sitting still in.

Three rooms called Crater

The kitchen keeps three addresses and names them all after the view. The Crater Lounge draws on African cooking with Asian influences; The Crater Grill works with fire, charcoal and local produce; The Crater Bar handles the drink at the end of the day, with the basin still in the window. A spa fills the gap for anyone taking a morning off. Dinner is an extension of the landscape, not a break from it.

The terrace at six, the crater already in shadow while the far rim still holds the sun. Dust from the afternoon drive is on everybody’s boots. Inside, the fire is lit and The Crater Bar is pouring, and the basin below goes from green to blue to nothing at all.
