Crystal Serenity is a ship for people who like the sea best when nothing in particular is happening. The forward end belongs to the Palm Court, where floor-to-ceiling glass carries a 270-degree view of whatever the ship is sailing into and an afternoon can be spent on a sofa without apology. Dinner is the day’s only real argument: Umi Uma, the only Nobu restaurant at sea, or the Waterside Restaurant for something longer and more ceremonious, with Osteria d’Ovidio and BeefBar between them. Suites come with butler service, the promenade deck is teak and open to the weather, and the Avenue Saloon stays lit for as long as the conversation holds. It is a ship that rewards a long itinerary and punishes a hurried one.
The Palm Court forward
The room at the bow is the reason to book a voyage with sea days in it. Floor-to-ceiling windows hold a 270-degree view of the water ahead, and the space is arranged for sitting rather than passing through: tea in the afternoon, music in the evening, the weather changing in front of you all day. On a long crossing it becomes the ship’s drawing room, and the habit of returning to the same chair at the same hour is most of what makes weeks at sea feel restful.
Dinner, and where to take it
Umi Uma is the only Nobu restaurant at sea and the reservation most guests want first. The Waterside Restaurant handles the longer, more formal evenings, Osteria d’Ovidio and BeefBar sit between the two, and the Bistro fills the hour at eleven when nobody is hungry enough for lunch. Speciality access and reservation allowances follow the booked fare, which is worth settling well before sailing rather than in the queue on the first evening aboard.
A suite for a long sailing
Serenity suits voyages measured in weeks, and accommodation should be chosen on that basis. Over three days a category is a price. Over three weeks it is where you live. Butler service comes with the suites, and the questions worth asking are the ones about daily life: how much living space you genuinely use, which side of the ship the morning sun arrives on, and how far the walk is to the promenade deck when you want air at six.
